Aschheim, Miramas, Arjeplog, and Sokolov: An Overview of BMW Group's Proving Grounds and Test Centers.

Before a new model ever reaches a dealership, it has already spent a multiple of its later lifespan on secret proving grounds. BMW Group operates four dedicated test facilities around the globe – each with a clear mission and its own climatic and technical conditions. Here's where BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad are put through their paces.
Aschheim near Munich: where it all began
BMW Group's oldest test facility lies just a few minutes' drive from the development headquarters in Munich. In operation since 1971, Aschheim forms the backbone of day-to-day testing work – from the very first prototype drives to fine-tuning shortly before series production. Its proximity to development in Munich means short distances between design, simulation, and real-world testing.
By the mid-1980s, however, Aschheim's capacity was reaching its limits as the model range kept growing, along with the need for additional testing mileage. That led to the next major step in 1986.
Miramas: the year-round heart of the operation in southern France
With around 4 million euros invested annually, BMW acquired the former Autodrome de Miramas near Istres, not far from Marseille, from previous operator Kléber in 1986. The site celebrated its 100th anniversary as a racetrack in 2024 – motorsport activity had ceased there in 1937, before BMW gave the grounds new life.
The big advantage of Miramas: the mild southern French climate allows for testing almost year-round, independent of winter weather. Across 480 hectares and roughly 65 kilometers of test tracks – including high-speed circuits, off-road sections, and handling courses – up to 4,000 prototypes are put through their paces every year. No production model from BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce, or BMW Motorrad escapes Miramas. The site is further shielded by a wall up to three meters high and eleven kilometers long, reliably keeping out curious onlookers and spy photographers. Over the past decade, around 44 million euros have gone into modernizing the facility.
Arjeplog: winter testing near the Arctic Circle
When it comes to snow, ice, and deep sub-zero temperatures, there's no way around Arjeplog. In northern Sweden, BMW Group has operated a winter test area for many years that becomes a focal point for nearly the entire automotive industry between December and February. Here, ESP calibrations, traction systems, and cold-start behavior are tested under real Arctic conditions – conditions no climate chamber in the world can fully replicate.
Sokolov: the largest test facility in company history
The newest and by far largest addition to BMW's testing portfolio is located in the Czech Republic, near Karlovy Vary. Opened in 2023, the Future Mobility Development Center (FMDC) Sokolov spans 600 hectares, making it BMW Group's largest proving ground worldwide. Around 300 million euros were invested, and more than 100 new jobs were created on the site of a former mining region.
Sokolov is dedicated exclusively to testing highly and fully automated driving as well as automated parking up to Level 4, complementing the established sites in Aschheim, Miramas, and Arjeplog, which primarily handle classic vehicle testing. Its proximity to Munich allows virtually developed driver assistance systems from the Research and Innovation Center to be quickly validated in real-world practice. The site was also built to the highest sustainability standards and runs on 100 percent green electricity.

Together, the four test facilities form a well-thought-out overall system:
