BMW Concept 7 Protection: Armour You Can't See.

With the Concept 7 Protection, BMW opens a new door in its special protection line-up. It is based on an M760e xDrive, it protects against handguns, and from the outside it looks like a perfectly ordinary 7 Series. That is exactly the point.
Until now, special protection at BMW meant the 7 Series Protection with VR9 rating (optionally VPAM 10) or the X5 Protection VR6. These are high-security vehicles for heads of state, diplomats and people facing a concrete threat. Below them sits a gap: entrepreneurs, private individuals and organisations who want protection against hard-to-predict risks but don't need a rolling safe. That is precisely where the new BMW Concept 7 Protection comes in.
A new protection class for a different risk profile
BMW cites a rising threat level, both real and perceived. At the same time, more and more customers want tested and traceably certified solutions rather than aftermarket conversions. The Concept 7 Protection targets scenarios such as violent robberies, attacks in traffic or travel in regions with an unclear security situation.
The vehicle meets the new BayB standard and protects against two particularly common handgun calibres: 9 × 19 mm and .44 Magnum. It deliberately offers no protection against explosives; for that, BMW points to its higher protection levels. The lower protection scope is not a compromise but a conscious choice.
Technical basis: BMW M760e xDrive
Under the bonnet sits the familiar plug-in hybrid of the M760e xDrive:
3.0-litre straight-six with 313 kW/426 hp
Electric motor integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic transmission with 145 kW/197 hp
System output 450 kW/612 hp, system torque 800 Nm
BMW xDrive all-wheel drive
BMW tunes the chassis, brakes, powertrain and driver assistance systems to the added protection as part of the complete vehicle. The goal: a driving experience as close as possible to the production 7 Series.
How the protection is integrated
The protection concept covers the transparent and selected non-transparent areas of the passenger cell:
Glazing: significantly stronger security glass than the production car
Doors: precisely integrated elements made of ballistic steels and fibre composites, including the transitions between door, glass and body
Rear quarter windows: additionally armoured from behind and discreetly concealed on the inside
Roof: a protective layer of steel and fibre composite beneath the standard panoramic glass roof. The exterior look is preserved, while the roof blind stays permanently closed.
Front bulkhead and rear wall: also included in the ballistic concept
Typical special protection features complete the package. An intercom system with microphones and speakers inside and out allows communication with doors and windows closed. A hold-up alarm triggers visual and acoustic warning signals when needed. The side windows remain electrically operated but only open partially.
Interior: still every inch a 7 Series
The show car features BMW Individual 'Merino' leather in Smoke White, Alcantara interior trims and a BMW M headliner in Anthracite Alcantara. Sun-protection glazing and electric sunblinds protect passenger privacy, while the digital interior mirror improves rearward visibility.
The most exciting detail for 7 Series fans who don't need armour: BMW is showing the BMW Individual rear console with table and cool box for the first time. The fold-out table includes a wireless charging tray and turns the rear into an office. It is set to become available for the production 7 Series during the second half of 2027.
BMW has been building certified special protection vehicles for more than 45 years. With the Concept 7 Protection, Munich signals that the portfolio could become broader, with clearly graded protection classes instead of all or nothing. For now it remains a concept vehicle, with an initial focus on selected European markets. BMW has not said whether Switzerland will be among them.
In my view, it's a smart move. The classic high-security 7 Series is simply too much for most potential buyers: too heavy, too expensive, too conspicuous. A discreet, factory-certified solution with M760e power should appeal to exactly those customers who have so far turned to third-party converters.
