460 kW – the BMW iX5 shows in California how fast charging can be in 2026.

A ten-minute coffee break, 363 kilometres of extra range. What sounded like science fiction just a few years ago, BMW demonstrated this week in Laguna Hills, Southern California, in front of international media. The new BMW iX5 60 xDrive drew up to 460 kW at a charging station. Two partners made it possible: the North American charging network IONNA and the South Tyrolean charging specialist Alpitronic.

Gen6: The heart behind the record charging power

The first all-electric X5 is the second model after the iX3 to use the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology. At its core is an 800-volt architecture with completely new high-voltage batteries. Instead of the prismatic cells of Gen5, BMW now uses cylindrical round cells, which pack around 20 percent more energy into the same volume.

Added to this are revised, more efficient electric motors and bidirectional charging. The car can not only take in power but also feed it back out.

The numbers that matter

  • Maximum DC charging power: up to 460 kW

  • Range added: up to 363 km in 10 minutes (WLTP)

  • Battery capacity: 141 kWh net

  • 10 to 80 percent: just 22 minutes

Let's do the maths: in those 22 minutes, almost 99 kWh flow into the battery. That equals an average charging power of around 270 kW across the entire window. In everyday use, this average matters more than the peak. It shows that the iX5 doesn't just touch high power briefly but can sustain it for a long time – and with a battery larger than most competitors'.

Why three partners?

A fast car alone isn't enough. The charger has to keep up, and the network has to work reliably. That is exactly where this cooperation comes in.

IONNA is a joint venture of eight carmakers: BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota. The goal is a charging network in North America that is above all reliable. To get there, IONNA relies on rigorous interoperability testing and on so-called "Rechargeries" – thoughtfully designed charging sites offering comfort instead of car-park gloom.

Alpitronic from Bolzano supplied the hardware for the 460 kW demonstration. Founded in 2009, the company has installed more than 125,000 charging points worldwide, which together have handled over 223 million charging sessions. Anyone who fast-charges regularly in Europe has most likely already plugged in at an Alpitronic Hypercharger. Alpitronic and BMW share a long-standing partnership.

The message from all three partners is the same: vehicles and charging infrastructure must evolve together. Otherwise, even the best battery technology remains just a figure on a spec sheet.

The catch: it's still a demonstration

As impressive as the figures are, some context is needed. The partners themselves make clear that the 460 kW charger is a technology demonstration and not hardware currently available in the US. At today's common fast chargers, typically rated at 150 to 400 kW, the iX5 won't be able to show its peak figures yet.

That is less a flaw than a glimpse of what's ahead. BMW is building the iX5 to be ready for the next generation of chargers rather than being held back by them.

What does this mean for Switzerland?

IONNA is a purely North American project. Alpitronic, on the other hand, is present at numerous fast-charging sites in Switzerland too. As soon as more powerful chargers roll out in Europe, iX5 drivers will benefit directly. And even at existing 300 or 400 kW chargers, the Gen6 battery's high average level should make for short charging stops – a strong argument for long trips over the Gotthard or to western Switzerland.

With the iX5 60 xDrive, BMW makes it clear that charging should no longer be a compromise. 460 kW peak, 22 minutes from 10 to 80 percent and a 141 kWh battery: the electric X5 raises the bar in the premium SUV segment. Now it's the infrastructure's turn.
