BMW Group Regensburg Plant Builds Its Nine-Millionth Car — A Swedish-Bound iX1.

Forty years after production began, BMW's Regensburg plant has hit a major milestone: car number nine million has rolled off the line. Fittingly, it's an all-electric BMW iX1 finished in BMW Individual Velvet Orchid II Metallic, custom-built for a customer in Sweden.

From Regional Newcomer to Europe's Highest-Volume Plant

The story started in 1986 with the BMW 3 Series (E30). Under the original settlement agreement with the city of Regensburg, BMW committed to building 400 cars a day and creating 3,500 jobs. Today, Regensburg is BMW Group's highest-volume vehicle plant in Europe, running around the clock in three shifts. A new car leaves the assembly line every 57 seconds — more than 1,400 vehicles per working day — and 2025 set an annual production record with over 356,000 units.

One Line, Every Powertrain

What stands out is the plant's flexibility: combustion, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric models all come down the same production line, adjusted to market demand. More than 150,000 of the vehicles built in Regensburg in 2025 were electrified. The fact that an electric iX1 marks this milestone is a fitting nod to that shift toward EVs.

Production board member Raymond Wittmann pointed to the plant as proof of consistent technology openness and a long-term commitment to manufacturing in Germany, while plant director Armin Ebner credited the roughly 9,000 employees — including around 380 apprentices — in Regensburg and Wackersdorf for the achievement.

What's Next: Neue Klasse on the Horizon

Today, Regensburg builds the BMW X1 and X2 across all powertrain variants. The plant was also named "Factory of the Year 2025," and the X1 built there again won its class at the "Best Cars 2025" awards. Looking further ahead, Regensburg is set to start producing BMW's next-generation Neue Klasse models in the second half of this decade.

Nine million cars in forty years is a striking track record — and with the Neue Klasse on the way, Regensburg's story is far from over.
